Understanding Huntington's Disease IN SEREMBAN
Huntington's Disease is a genetic disorder that gradually breaks down brain cells, leading to severe changes in movement, thinking and mood. People with this condition often experience involuntary movements, like sudden jerks or twitches and have trouble with balance and coordination. It can also affect cognitive abilities, making everyday decisions and remembering things more challenging. Emotional symptoms such as mood swings, depression and behavioural changes are also common.
The disease is caused by a mutation in the HTT gene, which is passed down through families in an autosomal dominant pattern. This means a person with the gene mutation has a 50% chance of passing it to their children. Diagnosing Huntington's Disease involves genetic tests, neurological exams and imaging studies to confirm its presence.
While there is no cure yet, treatment focuses on easing symptoms and improving quality of life through medications, physical therapy and support from healthcare professionals and loved ones.
Early diagnosis and a comprehensive care plan are crucial to managing the disease's progression and supporting those affected and their families.
